Only 7.6 square miles, with a population of about 3,000, this little fisherman's island off the coast of mainland South Korea is home to my aunts & uncles. Heuksando is where my grandmother & grandfather lived all of their lives, & where my dad grew up. With these photos, I hope to preserve not only my dad's memories but also the memories of a place that is slowly disappearing. The young leave in hopes of a brighter future & tourism is dwindling. Stuck in the past, while the world moves on, locals wonder if there is a future for their island home.
