If We Stand Tall…Recollections of Spirits Past

The title is taken from a Yoruba Proverb-“If we stand tall, it is because we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us”. This is a study of a Black community in Jamaica, NY, during the 70s, 80s & 90’s.
A memoir and memory work, it also explores the results of resilience, resistance & tenacity of the African American’s ability to thrive, in spite of the ancestral stain of enslavement under the gaze of white supremacy. It exemplifies why homage is paid to the ancestors’ survival of the Middle Passage and the Great Migration, by continuing to live, love, create, educate, build culturally & spiritually. These are the gifts of Black joy that we cherish. Yet it implies a commonality with many communities who share similar stories and experiences in the diaspora & around the world.
