King Henry IV

RISO-printed book depicting William Shakespeare's King Henry IV, Part One: Following the journey of Prince Hal and his plan to prevail over his youthful wildness by transforming into a dignified prince, making the feat all the more impressive for the King and their subjects to witness. Capturing the complex range of emotions that exist amid a time of brutality fascinates me greatly. This play enticed me to illustrate for my Junior Thesis because of its dualistic narrative: its patriotism that it simultaneously commends and mocks. There is a great, comforting bitterness to this work, with its depiction of the strained yet devoted bond between father and son, the expectations placed on the son, and who he will eventually become. It was reminiscent of my own familial relationships and the loss of self that many may experience.
