How can one bear witness to an event one has not experienced, or narrate a truth that cannot be fully conveyed? Historical narratives, through translation and retelling, become altered fragments. One of the central questions in this series is how such histories can be narrated through the language of art.
Translation allows for the appropriation and reinterpretation of a concept, distancing it from its original subject. This process can reach a point at which even representational images lose their symbolic function, and both image and concept move toward abstraction and non-symbolic forms.
Throughout the process, I experienced a persistent tension between remaining faithful to the original references and expressing the concepts I sought to explore.
