Masculinity and Other Landscapes

I was born and raised in the rural west and presented with a
single view of masculinity at a young age. As a result, I now
associate contemporary and historical landscapes – both
physical and cultural – with this concept of masculinity. I see
its driving, powerful force in the land and seek solace from it
in untouched places.
As I wander through this landscape, feelings of fear,
self-identification and arousal blend together and I can no
longer tell them apart – and I explore this grey area in this
body of work.
The battle between nature and nurture has always perplexed
me. In “Masculinity and Other Landscapes,” I attempt to
address these complex feelings through reflection to better
understand what is innate and what is learned.
