Submission Painting

Mugshots

This ongoing body of work presents a shifting relationship between portraiture and abstraction, between the individual and the spaces that shape and surround them. Across the series, each painting presents a grayscale figure set against vividly colored, abstract backgrounds that reference the visual language of wallpaper.
Drawing on police photographs from the 1920s and 1930s, these works pair expressive grayscale portraits with vivid abstract backgrounds. Fractured planes, bold patterns, and ornamental surfaces reframe the historical images, exploring the tension between the individuals depicted and the records through which we encounter them.
