“My Mum, 63” Photography Series by Renfang Ke

This series started as something simple: my mum came to help me set up my new studio in New York, and the light felt soft and almost sacred. I asked if I could take photos of her. She said yes. Then I asked her to wipe out her make up as much as possible.

That moment turned into a quiet ritual over the next few days — her visiting me during the Spring Festival, standing in front of the camera, half vulnerable, half radiant. “My Mum, 63” is about aging, about stillness, about the kind of beauty we rarely photograph — the kind that holds the shape of everything we’ve inherited.

Shot entirely in natural light with no styling, the photos became a way for me to both observe and connect. It’s not just about her. It’s about the women of her generation who shaped us, who stood behind us, who were never really seen — until now.
