My practice uses figurative painting and self-portraiture to reflect on the Black body today. On canvas, I investigate banzo, historically known as the deep grief experienced by enslaved people after losing their freedom and homeland. I understand this wound did not stay in the past; it remains alive in the exhaustion, isolation, and daily pressures that still weigh on Black lives. In response, I turn to dreams and Brazilian surrealism to forge new possibilities. I build scenes where domestic spaces shift into the fantastic, using color and layered planes to carve out room for rest, mystery, and self-determination for Black women, far from outside control.
