Patterns of Belonging

I create geometric, abstract line, grid and color field patterns. Each pattern captures a snapshot of a state of mind, thoughts, emotions and is an exercise in working through something, both systematically and randomly, following, and sometimes breaking, self-imposed rules. The structure of the grid provides a space for color to emerge. The resulting patterns are non repetitive, irregular, yet recognizably self-similar. Cut up, each piece, each bookmark, is different from all others, individual, yet clearly part of the same pattern, visibly belonging to the original larger piece, yet an entire work of art in itself. Cutting up a larger piece feels like an act of sacrifice, giving up something precious for something that is yet to emerge, and more importantly, giving up a physical object for a sense of connection and belonging.
