Photopsia

One week before I was meant to fly to Idaho to go whitewater rafting, I saw flashes of light in my vision. Told this experience was indicative of a retinal tear, I rushed to my optometrist. He referred me to a retinal specialist I could only see after my trip.

My mother went blind in her left eye when I was 10 years old. I figured I might be next. Nervous that my vision had an expiration date, I bought six rolls of Fujifilm 400, loaded up my Pentax MX, and took more photographs than I ever had.

Made across this period of uncertainty – from the east coast to Idaho – these images explore reflection, gestures, and shared moments to record the texture of my life before I no longer see it.
