Picture Making

In this series, I pair the flat, open landscape with the spontaneous presence of young figures who step into the frame—occupying the space while suggesting a self-conscious self-fashioning of what constitutes the act of picture-making.

To perform picture-making is to question the highly involved, yet often neglected, physical camera—along with its mental and intrusive dimensions within our everyday social settings. Questions arise regarding authorship as it unsettles the passive role behind the lens, the line between fiction and reality, and a sense of reflection where figures echo an action just passed.

This ongoing body of work can also be considered a reflection on anonymous youth navigating boredom and the mundane within open, quiet Vietnamese landscapes spanning from North to South.
