Submission Painting

Priya N. Green’s paintings

I make highly saturated oil paintings which play on my sensory memories of childhood trips to India visiting family. These works bridge a gap that spans through generations, distance and time as a way to remind me of my ajju’s world. Drawing from my late grandfather’s life as a storyteller and Bollywood filmmaker in the 1980s, I create dream-like, atmospheric paintings that reimagine my own upbringing as a millennial between worlds. Now, as my children get older, I want to preserve my ajju’s legacy of storytelling.

I recall the heightened sensory experience of visiting India in each of these paintings. The intense smells and sounds; the thick, hazy air. I use color, texture and transparency to create paintings that hover between appearing and disappearing; like grasping a fleeting dream before waking.
