Pursuit of Happiness

Pursuit of Happiness is about balance, contrast, and the way objects can shape an image. In this work, I use the American flag because it carries visual beauty, symbolic weight, and cultural meaning at the same time. The flag becomes part of the body and part of the composition. I also use three circular forms to fill the empty space and create contrast between black and white, light and shadow, fullness and emptiness. My work often feels like painting with objects inside the frame. From a distance, or with the eyes slightly squinted, the body, flag, circles, and negative space begin to read like an abstract painting. I am interested in how these forms can hold tension while still feeling balanced, quiet, and visually connected.
