Coming from a working-class background, this work is about belonging and claiming a place within environments associated with privilege and wealth.

SELF DECO is an ongoing series of self-portraits in which I place myself in front of different backdrops: Art Deco buildings, pools, saunas. Living in Brussels, I’m surrounded by Art Deco, so I use it as my setting, posing boldly in front of places like Villa Empain, now an art museum.
It feels liberating, and it’s also a way of stepping into art history, a space where people from my background usually don’t feel they belong, or don’t have access.

Mequitta Ahuja’s Italy Drawings, in which she places herself within Roman, Medieval, and Italian Renaissance backdrops, is a major inspiration, as is Tamara de Lempicka for her unapologetic attitude.
