"Sonata Transmutationis" is an ongoing multimedia project that began with the creation of two papier-mâché masks—one representing the sun and the other representing the moon. These are to have a microcosmic quality as they unfold across the seven stages of interpretive alchemy through the undercurrents of the macrocosm.
The work is structured around seven alchemical stages—Calcination, Dissolution, Separation, Conjunction, Fermentation, Distillation, and Coagulation—each stage consisting of ten photographs. Together, they function as movements within a visual sonata, where repetition, variation, and tension mark the evolution of form and meaning. This process entails subjecting the photographs to elemental forces, including burning and rusting the negatives and experimenting with film soup.
