“Subject To Approval” (2026) is a mixed-media self-portrait project that uses a rejected passport photo and the bureaucratic rituals around it as an exploration on belonging, identity, self-reflection and self-esteem.
The project began as a mildly inconvenient experience at the local council, when the artist’s headshot was determined “not suitable” for a new passport as the old passport was punched and returned. Instead of discarding the rejected print and the hole-punched passport, they became the raw material for a visual diary that is at times almost comedic, but is also a quiet critique of the way appearance is measured, categorised and analysed contextually as well as personally.
