The Birds Forgot to Migrate
Oil on aluminum foil, stretched over found window screen
17.5x25"

With an interest in human-built environments, my most recent body of work on aluminum foil maps infrastructure onto personal relationships, contrasting the metal surface to organic shapes. With a substrate that initially repels the paint, the sketch begins loosely, with a high ratio of thinner, the pigment disbursing at movement, skidding, dripping and pooling across the surface. Progressively adjusting the medium for opacity over fluidity, the weightier layers form a topological map of organic mark-making. Yet negative space, left untouched since the beginning, is immensely crucial to the composition; grey aluminum foil serves as both a baseline neutral and brightest highlights, depending on where the viewer stands.
