I paint from live models, but also by studying scientific imagery and classical statuary. All these representations of the human body feed into highly intuitive compositions in which, apart from the blind gazes of the statues, the figures always have their eyes closed. My characters are both absorbed in an inner world and immersed in a universe that transcends them. My pictorial practice thus explores the areas of transition between the visible and the invisible, body and space, intimacy and history.
My painting questions memory, the instability of forms and our relationship with living things, exploring the idea that nothing is immutable and that everything is in transition.
