The Impulse Before Movement

Before movement, there is a charge. In bronze and brass, I seek the impulse that makes a still form feel alive. Openings let space enter the sculpture; light changes its weight as we move around it.

These works follow energy through different states: the wild, instinctive freedom of horses; the shared charge of dancers; the trust between two bodies in a harmonious dance; the animal fury of a bull meeting human composure.

I am interested in how an inner state takes physical form — and how its tension can reach someone years later. I seek a form that leaves a trace after the gaze has moved on, a feeling one wants to return to.

Eugene Laguten, a sculptor near Sofia. I still do not know whether I shape the bronze, or it shapes me.
