The In-Between is a series of five pencil drawings about the gap between how a state looks from the outside and what it actually is. The same posture reads as reverence or as loss. The same movement is striving or fleeing – from the outside there is no difference, and sometimes you can't tell from the inside either. One drawing holds pain and will in the same point, with neither cancelling the other. Another is about solitude that looks like lack and turns out to be presence.
I work in graphite, building the image out of hatching – closer to engraving than to drawing. The series started on paper between oil paintings and became its own thing.
