The New York I Dreamed Up

The New York I Dreamed Up is a 30-day illustration series marking five years since I moved from Cairo to New York for my MFA. Before I lived there, New York was a dream I built from afar, a city on my Pinterest boards that I imagined calling home. Five years later, I’m temporarily away from New York and back in Cairo, the place where I first dreamed of living there. Being away feels strangely like waking up from a five-year dream: suddenly, the ordinary moments of that life feel vivid and precious. I’m revisiting my photographs and memories to draw the New York I actually lived, East Village streets, subway rides, intimate friendships, familiar corners and fleeting details.
