Johanna Claerhout (b. 1998) is a painter based between Paris and Brussels. Self-taught and trained as an art historian, she draws inspiration from the Old Masters, combining bold colour, dramatic light and expressive composition.
Her floral paintings transform flowers into powerful portraits, challenging traditional ideas of still life tradition and its connotations of femininity and beauty. Through striking shadows and theatrical settings, she explores the relationship between nature, emotion and imagination.
Her work celebrates the strength, individuality and beauty found in both people and nature.
In 'Théâtre des Fleurs' she shows 10 large-scale oil paintings of which a part clair-obscur in a theatrical setting.
