Unzipping Symmetry: Su A Chae’s Explorations of Identity and Belonging

My paintings create paradoxical spatial propositions that explore identity and belonging through the interplay of symmetry and asymmetry. Through patterned surfaces, zipper openings that reveal and conceal, and seemingly balanced structures, the work resists singular interpretation. Layered images drawn from lived experience and cultural history—including motifs rooted in minhwa, Korean traditional painting—disrupt perceived order, introducing subjectivity into patterned repetition. The paintings invite viewers into shared psychological terrains, where they can dwell within the asymmetries, tensions, and quiet negotiations that shape belonging.
