I seldom know what I’m going to draw when I begin a new piece. I start with an empty mind and begin to draw and move charcoal with my hands, blending and pushing pigment until forms begin to reveal themselves. A face, an expression, or an unexpected relationship comes into focus, and I follow it.
The drawings move between the familiar and the strange, often finding beauty in what first appears absurd, grotesque, humorous, or uncomfortable. I’m interested in expressions that seem honest, whether they suggest sorrow, vulnerability, amusement, or something I can’t quite name.
Every image takes me somewhere unexpected. I can’t predict what will appear next, and those uncertainties are pathways to places inside me that want to be discovered and are an essential part of why I make art.
