Gary Frier (b.1972, Cape Town) is a visual artist who creates culturally and socio-politically inspired work. After qualifying as a Graphic Designer from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in 2004, he transitioned from the design industry to pursue a more personal artistic practice. His work is characterized by a strong graphic quality, where he juxtaposes contemporary and historical African elements to create an emotive reflection of his place in the world. In addition to his independent practice, Frier facilitates a visual art and pottery programme at Valkenburg Psychiatric Hospital. His work is held in major collections, including the Iziko South African National Gallery and the Oliewenhuis Art Museum, and has been exhibited extensively both in South Africa and abroad.
