João Abreu Lopes (Lisbon, 1983) studied Graphic Design and has maintained a strong connection to drawing and the visual arts throughout his life. His early interest in image-making led him to animation, and in 2006 he joined a traditional animation studio in Cologne, Germany.

After returning to Lisbon in 2010, he worked across graphic design, motion design, stop-motion animation, post-production, art direction, and directing, alongside teaching.

In recent years, his practice has increasingly focused on oil painting, exploring tensions between realism and its contradictions, balance and discomfort, harmony and chaos, stability and collision. He currently lives and works in Évora, Portugal.
