Between Certainty and Perception
The works of Rufus Krieger move between figuration and abstraction.
They begin with familiar forms and motifs—human figures, animals, landscapes, spaces, or architectural structures.
These remain recognisable, yet their familiarity does not remain stable.
The images shift our certainty about what we are seeing without completely dissolving what is recognisable.
Overlays, fragmentation, displacement, and ruptures create pictorial spaces in which foreground and background, proximity and distance, body and surface lose their clear distinctions.
The works do not offer coded messages or new symbols.
Instead, the motif is removed from its familiar context and placed within a visual order whose rules only gradually reveal themselves through looking.
