Signa Sine Sensu
Paulus Maassen draws inspiration from the simple visual language that surrounds us every day: road signs, pictograms, letterforms, shapes that everyone recognizes without thinking about them. He translates that directness into work that hovers between painting and sculpture: paint built up into forms that break away from the wall.
Not all forms close. Alongside the frames that fold around an empty interior, there are loose, gestural segments that suggest a sign rather than a frame: a hook, an arrow, a figure that stops halfway. Together they form a collection of signs without language: recognizable in form, but empty of meaning. Closed or open, each sign remains silent about what it might mean.
