Last October I was invited to be part of POW! WOW! Japan and unlike other POW! WOW! festivals, this one was organized as more of a road trip—a more intimate event with less than a dozen artists: Kevin Lyons, Sam Rodriguez (and his wife Bu), Brendan Monroe, Evah Fan, Jet Martinez, Kami & Sasu, Kamea Hadar, and Jeff Gress. We all met up in Osaka and travelled to Okayama, where we lived in a temple together, cooking food and making art. The trip ended in Kobe with a more traditional festival event and each of the artists painting a mural. If you want to check out some of the photos I shot during the trip you can see them here.
A talented filmmaker collective, called Mighty Island, travelled from Guam to be part of the trip and I’d seen their work before so I was really excited to meet them in person. They just sent over the video they made, profiling each of the artists on the trip—it’s really great, check it out below!
