Bloom, gouache on paper 15″ x 24″

For their June exhibit, Nahcotta Gallery asked artists to reimagine the cover of a favorite, or most meaningful, albums. I chose "Jamie' s Song", by Sylvan Esso. “Jamie’s Song”, was made in partnership with the podcast Radiolab for their 2015 episode, Elements. The song was inspired by the episode’s opening story, a first-person account of living with and treating bipolar disorder.
The narrator, Jamie Lowe, treats her bipolar disorder with the element Lithium. In the story she tracks the element from its synthesis in Supernovas to discovery on Earth, where it is dug up, shaped into a pill, and used to treat her mental illness. It is a story about the forces shaping the universe and how these same forces shape who we are and what we do.
