My Goema work is an ongoing documentary project rooted in Cape Town’s Kaapse Klopse and the communities that carry this culture forward. As a Cape Town born filmmaker and photographer, I document Goema from within these spaces, focusing on the intimacy of rehearsal, preparation, community and fellowship beyond the spectacle of carnival. The work documents a living culture and an important part of Cape Town’s history. This year, the work became a large-scale public exhibition, presented during Heritage Month as part of the Cape Town Photography Festival. Installed at Company’s Garden in Cape Town, the exhibition brings these images into a shared public space and will remain on view for a year. The exhibition have also received significant media coverage, extending the work’s reach beyond the physical exhibition.
