The Cambridge English Dictionary defines the verb “to landscape” as follows: “To change the natural features of a plot of ground to make it more attractive”.
At what point do our needs and desires to connect with nature become more important than the specificity and authenticity of place? My works pair surprise and delight with notes of melancholy and longing, evoking a sense of collective lamentation for a vision of wilderness that, for the most part, doesn’t even exist, and our collective desire to save (or be saved by) it. Exploring themes of ecology and artificiality, my paintings explore the competing human instincts to care for and conquer, to delight in and be deceived by nature.
