"hovers" is Shunsaku Hayashi’s current exhibition at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin, on view from 12 June to 9 August 2026. The exhibition brings together five large-scale paintings and a single-channel stop-motion video work developed from a repeated leapfrog gesture found in a football video game’s goal celebration. By endlessly repeating this fleeting, playful movement and refusing the match’s return to normal play, the work suspends the body between competition and festivity, control and deviation, motion and stillness. It translates a brief digital gesture into hand-painted images, animation loops, and physical space, exploring how it can become bodily, repetitive, strangely ritualistic, and momentarily outside the logic of winning and losing.
