Anna U Davis is a Swedish-born, Washington, DC–based artist whose work centers on the Frocasians, gray-toned figures she began developing in the 1990s, inspired by her own interracial relationship and questions about race, gender, appearance, and cultural difference. Her paintings and drawings look at how people are read through the body, and how power, vulnerability, illness, surveillance, and social expectations shape that reading. In her recent work, figures overlap, contain one another, and move through one another, making the boundaries between bodies less certain. Davis will be an artist-in-residence at ISCP in New York from December 2026 through May 2027.
