Eugene Lvovsky builds images entirely from typography - letters, stems, and serifs cut apart and interlocked until they stop functioning as language and start functioning as form. The work rewards sustained looking: detail surfaces gradually, discovered rather than displayed.
Lvovsky's training began in fine art, not design. Estonian-born and Russian-Canadian, he completed his first post-secondary arts education in Saint Petersburg, Russia, as a porcelain and wood artist, with a co-op placement at the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory. After immigrating to Canada with his family, he graduated from OCAD University in 2000, which gave him the technical command of typography the current work depends on. He now works freelance, based in Toronto, devoting the greater part of his time to the practice.
