NAOWAO is a Japanese multidisciplinary artist and 3D designer. She studied filmmaking and worked at a media production company in Brooklyn, NY, before beginning her VJ practice in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. She later lived in Berlin to broaden her artistic practice and is now based in Tokyo.
Her work spans animation, sculpture, games, and print, connecting digital character design with physical making. Alongside commissions for commercial clients, she develops independent projects through 3D-printed figures, zines, and ritual objects.
Her ongoing project, AO (Awakening Overload), explores memory, grief, and transformation through a world of creatures. Through AO Echoes and participatory workshops, she examines how these figures acquire meaning through personal stories, everyday use, and acts of remembrance.
