Paulo Madureira was born in Nazaré, renowned for its giant waves, and has spent most of his life between Figueira da Foz, São Paulo (Brazil), and Cascais. His passion for photography emerged at the age of 15, when, through his holiday job, he purchased his first camera and a small darkroom.
Although he pursued his professional career in the business world, he remained unwaveringly devoted to photography. A self-taught photographer, he primarily works with Leica equipment and maintains a rigorous and continuous study of the history of photography. His main aesthetic and conceptual references include masters of documentary and street photography such as Eugène Atget, Paul Strand, Brassaï, Walker Evans, Man Ray, Dorothea Lange, and Diane Arbus.
