In my work, I always feel connected to literature. I am fascinated by a verbal metaphor. I like to look for a visual equivalent of a word, for poetic translation into the language of visual art. I’m interested in imagery that is, unlike literature, without narrative, and yet conveys a feeling just as strongly. Plotless, paintings become still metaphors.
I was born and raised in Ukraine where the mixture of cultures and languages was a part of my upbringing. Through my paintings, I search for ways to convey the sense of memory of my home, the feeling of a transplant. Both the imagery from my childhood in Europe and my native language play an important role in my work.
Just as I am inspired by the words I read, I am often fascinated by the things I observe day to day. The source for each of my pieces is usually within my rea
